The two agreed that women’s empowerment would be their main goal with the brewery, but the two knew there would be struggles. Going into fall, it is going to be a great time to continue and scale up our educational program. We are planning an internship program so women can be behind the scenes of beer. We wanted to make a really strong beer that could be the base for our beer cocktails. Out of that evolved a margarita that we make out of the base of the beer. We have customers in here that don’t drink beer, but they love margaritas.

Since then, they’ve been pouring every Tuesday through Sunday, with events like Thursday Loteria Nights, a Sunday farmers markets hosted by Garden Unidos, and pop-ups featuring local vendors. Check Facebook and Instagram pages for info on what’s pouring and what’s happening. Inside, smiling bartenders greet customers and the aroma of freshly brewed beer fills the room.

Making and enjoying tamales this time of year is a family tradition for many San Diegans, but for those selling tamales, there can be a lot of hoops to jump through to get the proper permits from the city. So, a local brewery is teaming up with local tamaleras to help them make sure their tamales end up on your table this holiday season. Garcia is part of the Pink Boots Society, an organization that helps women and non-binary individuals move up through the ranks of the beer industry through education, encouragement and inspiration. She believes the value diversity brings to the industry goes way beyond the flavors they create.

Davila grew up a block from where the brewery is now located on Julian Avenue in Barrio Logan. Mujeres Brew House is the only artisanal brewer by women for women in San Diego, so these Latina entrepreneurs hope to inspire others as they say there is nothing that women cannot achieve. Carrying out has not been easy, let alone in the midst of the pandemic, as they do not know what will be the future for small businesses.

The brainchild of Carmen Velasco-Favela, the all female-run and Latina-owned brewhouse opened its doors on July 1st, 2020. Since then, the brewery has been reimagining the stereotypical gender and race of the craft beer industry. Brenda Gomez, a lead bartender for Mujeres, joined the team when the brewery first opened its doors.

The club would bring in speakers to talk about the history of beer and how to make it. The club was only meant to be an educational series, but it ended up lasting six months. This event would sell out, making Velasco-Favela and Davila aware that women are very active in the beer community. We started marketing the project before we could even serve beer. And it wasn’t just getting our club members involved, but the community too.

Re-writing the Narrative: The Origins of Mujeres Brew House as a Women’s Beer Club

I had been working in the front of the house but didn’t really know what it was like brewing beer behind the scenes. An all female-run and Latina-owned brewery, Mujeres Brew House was established in July 2020 by Carmen Velasco-Favela to offset the lack of female representation in the craft beer industry. “They’re not conforming to the industry,” says David Favela, co-founder of Border X Brewing and Velasco-Favela’s partner in business and life. Never in my dreams did I ever think, “Oh, someday the club would have a brewery.” The building owners were ecstatic to think women would take over the space and continue our educational series. So now we have a brewhouse and take the whole experience to a whole nother level. The place was literally turnkey, so everything was already here and so fortuitous.

The art that fills the walls was painted by local female artists. The main mural that fills an entire wall in the tasting room was created by España Garcia. She created the “Beer Goddess.” The crown that sits on the woman’s head is made of hop; the flower beer is made from. The spikes sticking out of the crown are barley and her hair is water. The muralists later incorporated Aztec markings on the woman’s face to incorporate the cultural aspect of the brewery. The Mujeres Brew Club was created to encourage women to learn more about beer.

“A lot of times when people think about Southern California, they think of the cities. (Bell, CA) –  Edgar Preciado (@BeerThugLife), founder of BeerThugLife LLC., announces the official opening of Beer Thug Brewing Co. in the city of Bell, CA. Mr. Preciado will be opening a brewery and taproom via an alternate proprietorship with Border X Brewing located at 4400 E Gage Ave, Bell, CA 90201. “I think when women come together into space, we're just stronger. Not only are we inviting, tamaleras, but we're also promoting them,” said Carmen.

I enjoy my Latina palette, and the beers we are making are for that audience. When we started this project, my goal was to create things that no one else was doing. We started doing beer cocktails, we have a michelada bar downstairs that has 30 toppings because that’s how you get it in Mexico.

Each of the three brewing companies will add to the diverse Latinx landscape offering beer, food, music, and aesthetics reminiscent of traditional, contemporary, and postmodern Latinx culture. "We start with the history of craft beer in San Diego and make a beer along with women," Favela said. She said that due to the overlying history of adversity for women, this project was going to be tricky. However, the two partners both say that the biggest challenge with this brewery is not to think about that. Despite the accelerated timeframe, Davila and the Favelas crystallized their vision to capture what they saw as an unmissable opportunity. The Favelas also pledged to provide a percentage of all sales to fund Mujeres’ training programs and special events.

Community tables fill the space, with a mural celebrating street vendors and artwork from the Boyle Heights community arts center Self Help Graphics & Art. Mr. Preciado began his venture into the craft beer industry in 2018 after he recorded a video of him chugging a triple, hazy IPA from Monkish Brewing on a drunken night. Prefacing the chug with a raunchy quip, the video on Instagram would end up garnering thousands of views. It was at that moment that Mr. Preciado realized an opportunity to change his life.

SAN DIEGO — Talk to Samantha Olson for five minutes, and you’ll realize right away how much science and love she infuses into each beer she brews. “When I grew up here it was very rough, a lot of gang activity, a lot of violence,” she told FOX 5. For now, they have several flavors and beer cocktails ranging from, michelada cucumber, guava beermosa, to a special for the cold, a grandma chocolate stout. “The IPA is good, the bartenders are cool, and the music is great,” Pimentel said.

Traditionally, you stuff the saladito in an orange where the juice rehydrates the fruit.

Little by little, I took on more responsibility at the brewery, and I became very passionate about celebrating our culture through craft beer. The beers that Border X makes are the kind of beers that I had no idea you could make. In either 2017 or 2018, we were doing market research to try and figure out who our customers at Border X were, and we realized that the majority of customers were actually women.

But one brewery in Southern California is bringing women back into the brewhouse and into the front for that matter. At Mujeres Brew House, they’re reclaiming that title of women as the original brewers. Border X Brewing is a brewery that offers craft beer inspired by classic Mexican flavors.
